The inevitable trend of the development of food flexible packaging: safety, environmental protection and hygiene (II)

the author believes that the current technological transformation of green food packaging in China should start from the following two aspects:

1. Control from the source

the size of plastic color printing manufacturers in China is different, and the performance grade of production equipment is uneven, with small-scale color printing manufacturers accounting for the majority. Due to the intensification of competition in the food packaging industry, some small-scale manufacturers pay attention to the cost of products today, ignore the internal quality of products, and lack the evaluation of comprehensive performance, safety and hygiene. In view of this, printing manufacturers should make great efforts to strictly control printing equipment, raw materials, process parameters, etc. However, toluene has good affinity for BOPP and other polyolefin films. When printing packaging bags, especially on printing materials with large inking area and thick ink layer, solvent residues are difficult to volatilize. Although there is strict process management, once out of control, excessive benzene solvent residues may occur. Although some large-scale printing manufacturers have advanced equipment, it is often difficult to control the toluene residue in printed matter, which has become a difficulty in the sanitary control of flexible packaging. Only by controlling from the source can we fundamentally eliminate it

at present, alcohol soluble composite ink has been used as a new process for printing, and the residue of toluene has been greatly reduced, which can meet the control standard of < 3mg/m2 recommended by the industry at present. Although the toluene residue is controlled within a limited range, it still does not comply with the standards of the European Union and the United States, and the export products still cannot pass the barriers of Western Europe and other developed countries. If China issues a mandatory standard next year to prohibit the use of benzene solvent inks in food and drug packaging, then the food and drug packaging and printing must use alcohol soluble, ester, water-based and other environmental friendly benzene free inks, so as to fundamentally solve the safety and health problems of food and drug solvent residues in China's printing and packaging industry. This will also be a leap in the improvement of printing technology and quality in China's flexible packaging industry

2. Improve ink connecting materials

in Europe and the United States, plastic inks can be divided into two types: surface printing and internal printing. Considering the production cost and market development requirements, the current surface printing ink uses alcohol soluble polyamide and nitrocellulose as the connecting material, and the produced ink can completely replace the current surface printing ink with toluene and isopropanol as the solvent. The surface printing ink with polyester and polyurethane as the main connecting material has excellent performance. At present, it has been the leading ink for high-grade flexible packaging printing in Europe and the United States. Some printing and packaging with high requirements have adopted this kind of ink. Ink for flexible packaging of waterborne plastic film has been reported to be applied in flexographic printing abroad in recent years

at present, benzene free (or alcohol soluble) composite inks are used in China, mainly polyester/polyurethane or PVB resin. BOPP, pet and NY films can be printed, and their printability, composite suitability and specific functional requirements all meet or exceed benzene inks. In addition, the research and development of alcohol soluble ink using modified acrylic polymer and PVB as connecting material and the research of ink technology for waterborne flexible packaging have made practical breakthroughs. Similar to alcohol soluble ink, vibration testing is an indispensable tool to help your products leap into the ranks of high quality, and has been introduced to the market in batches, such as Zhejiang New Oriental ink, Shanghai DIC Shanghai sikebai and Dalian Schmidt have their own alcohol soluble ink products
